My dog is a good girl, mostly. We have trained her to be off-leash any time she is out in the backyard; she can chill, do her business, stalk the groundhogs and squirrels, poke her nose around the perimeter of the woods, and be totally free, as long as she comes any time she's called. As a reward for coming back into the house on the first call, she gets these treats.
Well, today, when I went to get her from the back, she was already sitting at the door waiting. I opened the door, and she came skidding through in a hurry, then disappeared into the next room. I was left standing there with a treat in hand, so I called her back, gently shaking the bag to remind her it's time for a treat. She came back immediately, sat like a good girl, took her treat, and then scurried away into the next room like she always does so that she may chew her treat in peace. I walk through the kitchen and into the room wherein she was laying on the floor, and find her peacefully nomming the last bit of the treat. Right next to her, however, is what I immediately recognize as an entire leg that once belonged to a rabbit. I realized this is what she brought in so hurriedly when she zoomed right past me and the treats. That realization was followed by the next, which was that she ditched the rabbit's leg happily for one of these treats. I suppose this means that my wild girl, who loves to snack on wild things, would still choose this treat over anything she catches while she's outside.
